Everyone should get a little better at deciphering the labels on the back of their food. They have some tricky terms out there….
The problem with some of the labels. When I picked up the martins supermarket Grassfed milk, (grasspoint farms) it says they “have access to outdoor pastures” …sketchy. reading about their cows, you dont really see 100% grassfed, which is a huge different, and if you do feed them 100% grassfed, they WILL tout it on the label. they write “From allowing for enough pasture land for each cow to graze on for as much time as the seasons will allow” hmmm, the best way to find out is just to call them and ask “do your cows ever have access to grains?” If they do, you are just paying a big price tag for a small change.
(From below article)
Grassfed—according to the USDA, means an animal must have “access” to grass and pasture during its life, and the animals must get the majority of its nutrients from grass. The USDA does not define how much time or at what age these animals have this “access” to grass or pasture. Nor will the USDA monitor ranches/feedlots 24/7 to verify how much time an animal spends eating grass vs. grains from feed troughs. So, once again, big beef industry will open a gate from their feedlots to an adjacent pasture to qualify as Grassfed. Now, even more horrific, the USDA is allowing producers to implant animals with Growth Hormones and to doctor with Antibiotics and to feed medicated feeds and still qualify as Grassfed. The USDA’s position is that the use of hormones and antibiotics has nothing “literally” to do with the “concept” of grassfed. We, little guys, all argued (in person before the head of the USDA’s labeling committee) that the average consumer would be EXTREMELY CONFUSED by this labeling. The “SPIRIT” of the Grassfed movement is to provide consumers with a healthier choice…who cares what is meant by “literally vs. figuratively”. All I can say is that the big-beef industry easily won this labeling battle, and American consumers will be very confused by it.
How to Read these labels, grass fed? organic? free range? Read this before you go stocking up on “organic” foods
Food additives and what they do

**Also just as a note, the weekends you will see some occasional experimentation, team workouts, new movements. If a situation arises where we do go to an affiliate competition its always good to know how team workouts are operated, how to work with each other, to get used to learning new movements on the fly..etc etc
Having some pillow issues? you would be surprised how much this helps…

Way to go ABell!!!!!!!
Super fun wod on Sunday. Great job everyone.

Congrats Abell! That’s awesome.
On the issue of labels, I have a question about the grass fed beef from DC meats. Brandon do you (or does anyone else) know if the beef they sell there is 100% grass fed. It doesn’t have any labels on it, and the person I spoke with there didn’t seem to know. If anyone knows of a place around here that sells 100% grass fed beef please let me know. I don’t want to be paying extra at DC meats if I’m not getting the genuine article.

There is a farm on blackberry, just off dragoon about 10 minutes from the gym. I have a friend that buys meat there, but I never have. It might be worth checking.

You can get that also from crystal valley organics. The ground beef is about $4 per pound (they all meats, pork, chicken, eggs ect., whatever they don’t produce on their farm they cooperate with other amish farms to get a large variey of products) and they are the ones I mentioned earlier that have a pick-up area near the UP mall on Tuesday. Not sure if anyone is interested or not but I can set up a “field trip” to the farm. Sounds corny I know, but I have done this for my homeschool group and it is a great way to get a lot of info about what products they have and see how the farm works and how all the animals live and are cared for. You can even collect eggs while you are there!!
Then if it is warm, we can head over to my campsite on cass lake in shipshewana and swim and grill up some beef!! Oh no, what have I just done… (imagining all of the rednecks up at the camp watching all of you crossfitters!)

Robbie. When I talked to the owner of DC neanta that the cows are grass fed and them in the colder months they are fed hay. I have often wondered myself how they are able to sell it fir the price they do when other grass fed beef is more. Again the owner told meanybody can sell to a customer once, his goal is to keep you coning back.
Bobbie, the field trip sounds awesome, I would live to go sometime!

Congrats ABell!
I don’t know if it’s accurate, given how spotty the CF Games site has been – but it looks like CFSB is in 21st place after wod 1, out of 39 official teams. Top 30 go to regionals…nice job everybody!
March 27, 2011 at 9:28 pm
Wow, my silly phone did a horrible job spelling the words in my previous post, hopefully you were able to figure out what I meant
March 27, 2011 at 10:06 pm
Thanks for the suggestions on the grass fed beef.
Let’s keep the great work going on the Open WODs. Hopefully we’ll make it to regionals, and we can help Nick get to games.

DANG AARON!!!! Way to go!!!
March 27, 2011 at 10:20 pm
I don’t know if I can stomach the ENTIRE field trip…but I am interested in the eggs! And, any social activities that follow the field trip, as long as I can have a small spot on the grill for some veggie burgers. hehehe
Congratulations, Aaron Bell, and the Crossfit South Bend Team!!!

thanks everyone for the kind words. It was a great competition I met some people from the local crossfit gyms (transformation and hyperfit) and two strength coaches from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!!) a team from CFSB is a definite must next time, the other gyms brought 5 or so people each and I think that you guys would provide some great competition. http://crossfittransformation.com/ they have some pictures of their team lifting posted.
Everyone made fun of me again for all my power cleans/snatchs, but that is how I do.
